The firm moved to 13 High Street , Hawick in 1986 having formerly been in the Royal Bank of Scotland 's Tower Knowe premises where they had functioned since 1832. The beginnings of history go back almost 200 years to the time when John Oliver (born 1770) completed his law studies and became a partner with John Elliot in setting up a legal practice in or about 1790. The firm of Oliver & Elliot were appointed agents for the Commercial Bank in the 1820's. When John Elliot relinquished his partnership to take up a post in Jedburgh John Oliver's son, George was assumed as a partner to his father and the name was then changed to John & George Oliver, Writers and Bankers in 1824. On the death of John in 1849 he was succeeded by his younger son James and once again the firm changed its name to Geo & Jas Oliver, a familiar name in legal practices for over 150 years now. The Oliver name continued in an unbroken line via J J Oliver, his son J S Oliver W.S and now his grandson John A L Oliver W.S who is a partner in the firm today and is in partnership with John Paterson Hunter who has been with the firm since 1989.
